In the MULTI BAND & MULTI OPERATOR' S environments, overcoming Passive Inter-Modulation ( PIM) can become the biggest problem in collocating multiple RF parts of the Base Transceiver Stations ( BTS) . PIM is the result of two ( or more) signals of different frequencies being mixed together in passive systems ( e.g., combiner, duplexer filter, connector, coaxial cable, or antenna) forming additional non-linear signals at frequencies that are not at harmonic frequencies of either.

The higher the signal amplitude, the more pronounced the effect of the non - linearities, and the more prominent the PIM. PIM creates noise or interference when it falls within the devices’ reverse path.

If the system is to be used for multi-band services which may produce PIM, special attention must be paid to the selection of the components and to the installation. In this case, to avoid PIM’ s negative effects, passive components placed after the high power amplifier should be carefully selected with high PIM specifications.

However, since PIM characteristics change due to time, temperature, and vibration, PIM cannot be completely avoided by careful design.

PIM inevitably deteriorates service quality leading to increased maintenance costs, which warrants improvement.
